Top 10 HR Blogs

TribeHR has been searching the internet for a reliable list of the top HR bloggers, tweeters, and social media personalities. While there are lots of lists out there, most of them haven’t been updated in a few years, or don’t explain how they chose the rankings.

There are (of course) a few exceptions—recent lists that seem to have been objectively made. Unfortunately they almost never agree with each other.

In order to fill the void, TribeHR found ten of the best rankings (including UberMedia, PostRankPostRank Connect, Evan Carmichael, Google Blogs, and more), and assigned points for inclusion in each of them. We decided to leave out writers who only appeared on one list, with the assumption that the list was biased, or the ranking was an anomaly.

Here are our findings: The top 10 HR Blogs.

1. Evil HR Lady (Blog, Twitter). This Swiss sensation offers a ton of content and has a huge following, ranking near the top of most of our lists. Suzanne Lucas answers questions, posts tips and tricks, and is a regular contributor to a bunch of other blogs, including Carnival of HR and bnet.com. Evil? Maybe. Evil genius? Most definitely.

2. Punk Rock HR (Blog, Twitter). This blog was actually tied with Evil HR Lady for first place overall, but was included in less lists overall, so we gave it the number 2 spot. Punk Rock HR hasn’t published new content in almost a year, because founder Laurie Ruettiman has moved to a new HR blog. Nonetheless it's still popular, and a great resource. When you’re on the go, a handy mobile site makes reading from your smartphone a cinch.

3. HR Bartender (Blog, Twitter). Comparing herself to a bartender—“that friendly face who’s there when you need them”— Sharlyn Lauby is an HR consultant and executive, who blogs about human resources, social media, and her love of food and drink. If you get tired of staring at words all day, she also has a pretty extensive set of YouTube video blogs.

"If you make me throw up in my mouth you won’t get hired."

Know HR (#9) tells it like it is.

4. HR Ringleader (Blog, Twitter). Trish has a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management, writes two different blogs, and organized last month’s sold-out HREvolution human resources conference in Atlanta. Her posts lean a little bit more towards the academic side of Human Resources, which might make them even more valuable.

5. Rehaul (Blog, Twitter). Lance Haun’s posts are sometimes long, but he packs them full of insight and attitude. Occasional guest posts keep things fresh, while a good categorization system makes it easy to quickly access the information you want.

6. The Human Horse Races (Blog, Twitter). A bit hard to navigate, but always interesting. Mike Van Dervort writes about HR and Social Media, and gets excited when he stumbles across a “sexy job description.”

7. HR Capitalist (Blog). Personal branding and links to great books. What’s not to like?

8. SHRM (Blog, Twitter). While not technically a blog, the Society for Human Resources Management has a solid online presence, and made the cut on a few different rankings. Their Twitter feed is particularly popular.

9. Know HR (Blog, Twitter). Promoting itself as “straight talk about human resources,” this blog has everything going for it. Check it out.

10. Steve Boese (Blog, Twitter). Steve is a College Instructor. And he has his own radio show. Pretty cool.

Honourable Mention: TribeHR (Blog, Twitter). Okay, so we might be biased. TribeHR didn’t crack the top 10,  but we were the only blog to be featured on the same list two times (the main page was #4, the blog was #5). TribeHR is a new company, so you’ll have to cut us some slack. We’re on the rise (promise!).

Honourable Mention: Vina HR (Blog?, Facebook). It’s mostly in Vietnamese, but it was the only HR-related page that turned up with any strength in a Facebook search. If you’re involved in Asia, it might be worth taking a look.

Oh thank you! I'm so honored to be at the top of your list. Everyone on the list is fabulous (although I speak no Vietnamese, so I'm just guessing on the last one).

Thank you for sharing so much useful information!

On closer inspection, you're right, they are indeed links to related content. I've edited my criticism out of the post. I'm not an expert by any measure, but you might want to standardize them somehow, so that other people don't repeat my mistake. Also, Michael and Suzanne: Don't thank me for your high rankings, thank your great content and dedicated readers!

Thanks so much for including me on the list! I'm honored.

Except for the Vietnamese blog I am totally unfamiliar with, I'm right onboard with this list!

I would like to humbly offer my blog for consideration. I have recently changed sites so I disappeared a bit. But HR Observations is almost 5 years old and I have over 600 posts. I write in the compliance world but also include many posts on a variety of subjects. My Twitter name is @mikehaberman. Take a look. Thanks.

Thanks so much for having KnowHR on the list. I appreciate it!

No appreciation (or scorn! I see you, Tweeps) should come my way—this list is just a compilation of other top lists, search engine results, and scores from social media monitors. Literally zero opinion went into the rankings (though I can't say I'm disappointed in the results). Mike Haberman: You've got some great content. Unfortunately the methodology of this list favours established blogs that have had consistent branding (and thus Punk Rock HR—which Laurie ended 9 months ago—is #2, while the Cynical Girl, by the same author, didn't crack the top 10). I've gladly started following you via RSS. Keep the missed blogs coming! I'm keeping track, and will be sure to include them if I write an update.
